i'm sure there are many other methods, but this one works for me and just as importantly, uses FREE software.
1) insert original dvd movie, start dvd decrypter, go to mode>iso>and choose "read." choose the drive with dvd movie as the source, for the "destination" choose where and the name you want the iso file saved as. when you're ready click the button under that to start the decryption.
2) occupy yourself with something else. this will probably take at least an hour. the dvd decrypter window will show you an estimate of the time remaining.
3) ok, once dvd decrypter is finished with that, close it and
1)open dvd shrink.go to file>open disc image. find the iso image you just made with dvd decrypter and choose it. dvd shrink will take a couple of minutes to analyze it. instead, click the "open disc" icon.
4) when thats finished, 2) choose "automatic" under the compression settings section. dvd shrink will automatically choose how much compression you need to make everything fit on your dvd. now you're ready to click the "backup!" icon.

5)3) where it says "select backup target" drop down the menu and choose "iso image file and burn with dvd decrypter." for "select target image file" browse to the place you want to save the new (shrunk) iso image. then click "ok."
6) 4) dvd shrink will begin encoding now. this will probably take another hour or so. so please do not wait staring at the screen as it works.
7) 5)once dvd shrink is finished it will open dvd decrypter so that you can burn the iso to a blank disc. if you haven't already, insert the blank disc. click the button to start burning. this doesn't take as long as the other steps. maybe 20 minutes?

8) 6) when its done, test your new dvd and see if it actually works!
thank you cheesegod for pointing out that using dvd decrypter first was superfluous!
